Nancy Riesco and Rebecca Lapres, of the Vancouver design firm Riesco & Lapres, have been committed to creating high-end, residential spaces since the firm’s inception in 1987. They share a design aesthetic that balances beauty with comfort, and traditional with modern; in short, a timeless and richly layered look that makes a space appear as if it has evolved over many years.

Over their years of working together, Riesco and Lapres have watched the design market change as public interest in design has grown to an unprecedented level: hence the explosion of design shows and magazines that educate the public on how to achieve designer spaces for themselves.

And this is where Boxed: Clever comes in. Boxed: Clever is mail-order design for prospective clients who may not have worked with a designer, or for those on a limited budget, who would like to tap into the expertise, experience and resources of these two designers, and are motivated to save by actively implementing the plan themselves.

Boxed: Clever is a room in a box—a personalized design plan for a set price. Boxed: Clever clients will receive a custom plan with an inspirational concept board; suggestions on how to pull it all together; fabric and paint palettes; room layout; floor plans; furniture and lighting recommendations; and detailed information on where to source all the goods.

Design made simple that comes to you—open the box and find all you need to make over your space—at your pace, on your budget.

Boxed: Clever—how does it work?

Here’s what you do: fill out the questionnaire; measure your room or rooms (we’ll show you how—it’s easy); send us digital photos of your space and your home’s exterior; and tear sheets from design magazines that demonstrate the look you want to achieve. You place your order on-line; at that point, we listen carefully to your goals for your space, create a personalized design plan, box it up and send it out.  Four weeks later,  you take it from there.

Boxed: Clever—what is included?

Here’s what you get: as a Boxed: Clever client, you will receive the same creative design and resources that Riesco & Lapres offers its full-service clients. Your custom box will contain all the elements required for a complete design overhaul of one room (if clients choose to decorate more than one room, then they will receive one custom design box per room). Each box will contain:

• an inspirational concept board that illustrates how all the elements (style, colour, pattern) come together using magazine photos, paint, wallpaper and fabric swatches, and tile/stone samples if applicable
• an introduction that explains the designer’s inspiration behind the personalized design plan, and an easy-to-follow list demonstrating to clients how to realize the design in their room
• a detailed floor plan drawn to scale
• a book/ring of paint chips (and wallpaper samples, if specified)
• a book/ring of fabric swatches, or flooring samples (stone, tile, wood)
• a book/ring of furniture/lighting examples
• a book/ring of home accessories options as a finishing detail (if applicable)
• a go-to list of on-line and local retail sources to locate the recommendations, along with price options

Boxed: Clever—how much will it cost?

That depends on the room and the scope of the job.  We have broken down the various spaces in a home based on size and design complexity, and the time and resources needed to successfully redesign the space.

• living, kitchen, family room, bathroom $1200 per room
• bedroom, dining, home office, playroom, study $900
• entry, hall, mudroom, powder room, $600

All Boxed: Clever clients who purchase 3 or more rooms will receive a 15% discount.

Please note that these costs are based per individual room and do not include shipping (C.O.D.).

Boxed: Clever—what happens if I have questions about the design plan?
The whole rationale behind Boxed: Clever is to make design simple to understand, easy to implement, and accessible to all. We aim to  please; if you need clarification about specific issues, we are happy to respond to email inquiries. If at any time you would like to become a full-service client of Riesco & Lapres, we would be delighted to work together.

Using years of experience based on successfully working with diverse clients, Riesco & Lapres customizes every Boxed: Clever design plan for each individual client, drawing on all the information the client submits. Once the personalized design plan is completed and sent out, Riesco & Lapres regrets that it cannot redesign the design plan or refund any fees.

Boxed: Clever—what’s with the name?

If you’re not a big fan of British novels, then perhaps you have never heard the common English expression “boxing clever”, which means acting in a clever, even sly, way to achieve a desired result. Boxed: Clever clients are in fact “boxing clever” in that they are achieving their goal of high-end design for their space, but at a greatly reduced cost. Riesco & Lapres chose this cheeky expression to represent their new line, not only for the obvious reference to clever design—boxed up and ready to go—but also because the firm is seeking resourceful and innovative ways of bringing design to you, on your terms.
